10. Piute County Potato Grower's Association

Most of the farmers built & maintained pits to store their potatoes until they could market them. The first pit in town was a cooperative project constructed in the 1930's just north of the Potato Growers Association building on Highway 89. Continuing north on Highway 89 there were two pits. One potato pit still exists today. Each member owned so many bins. Potatoes were sorted, graded & bagged in the pit and then shipped to market. Once it became obvious that there was a market for potatoes, other pits were soon under construction around the town.

Located northeast of Circleville just off Highway 89, was a potato sorting & washing plant. It came into being after potato markets demanded a cleaner premium pack of potatoes. Farmers raised money to build the facility. Large semi-trucks wheeled in to load the product to transport to consumer markets. This was a very successful business and was active until the growing of potatoes became too expensive and water became too scarce.
